Ourselves In Others

“Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others,
and the delight in the recognition.”
Alexander Smith, a Scottish poet, clearly a romantic
man, wrote these words in the 1800’s.

My observation is that we are drawn to people,
whether as friends or as lovers, who are similar
to us, who make us feel excited about the
qualities that they have and what’s
important to them,
people in whom we do see ourselves.
Clearly, if you love and admire these qualities
in people who are just like you, then you have
to also recognize that these are qualities that
you love about yourself.
That is the absolutely most powerful and effective
way to genuinely and passionately love yourself.
